This handwoven jute basket has a minimalistic aesthetic and seamlessly blends into contemporary living spaces. A favourite among environmentalists, jute has a negligible carbon footprint. It is also biodegradable and 100% compostable.
The fibres are first extracted by a process called retting wherein jute stems are bundled together and immersed in low, running water. After which, in a process called stripping, the non-fibrous matter is scraped off, while the fibres found inside the jute stem are retained for weaving by talented women artisans from India.
