Muguni stone is essentially black marble found in Odisha that is an extremely tedious material to work with. Prior to the carving process, the raw stone is sculpted and shaped using a hammer and a chisel to bring out the basic form of the desired product on which the patterns would be carved. The craftsman then marks the outline of the design using a compass. Once the outline is marked, he then draws the desired design using a pointed chisel. The craftsman then carves through these pre-drawn patterns using various grades of flat chisels and a hammer. After which, it is sent for further polishing and beautification. Carving on stone allows superior craftsmanship to shine through!
