These baskets have been handcrafted by the women of the Meitei community of Manipur, from water reed grass. Versatile and durable, this grass lends itself beautifully to weaving. The reed is first cut near the base of the plant and dried in the sun. It's also smoked to be preserved and stored for a longer time. It's then woven by interlacing the stalks with jute threads making it soft, supple and easy to weave.
